A crab cake is a patty made from crab meat and other ingredients. Crab cakes are often associated with Baltimore, Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay area - where they are traditionally made from Atlantic blue crab meat. On the West Coast, king crab meat is the main ingredient for making crab cakes.

There are two main styles of crab cakes:  "Boardwalk-style" crab cakes are breaded, and are often deep-fried or pan-fried.  "Restaurant-style" - also known as "gourmet crab cakes" - are unbreaded, and typically pan-fried or broiled.

Classic crab cake ingredients include:  crab meat, a binder such as bread or cracker crumbs, mayonnaise, mustard, worcestershire sauce, egg, lemon juice, and seasonings (Old Bay Seasoning is popular).
